Apparently I don't remember sh*t from Grade 8 sewing class... my thread keeps breaking, the stitches at the back are completely different than the front ones, I use the foot pedal like I'm driving a car on the highway, I'm a sewing mess!

I experimented with a few pieces of fabric that I was willing to sacrifice, but quickly moved to on to sewing with paper, which oddly seemed less precious and less serious. I just relaxed a little more with the paper.

Because I am crazy and impatient and need to make something immediately, I started a garland....at least the beginnings of one. I realize I am very far from making that apron I was talking about. At this point, I can sew about 4 triangles (that's my record) and then my thread breaks. I've got some ways to go, obviously. Luckily this wonky garland (once I finish it) will go very nicely with my unintentional amoeba-shaped glass ornaments. Ahh.... there's nothing like experimental holiday decorations.

I've decided I need to take a beginners class. This whole idea of remembering how to sew from 18 odd years ago and "teaching" myself isn't going to work....

I can feel your pain in the last 2 posts... I really can!! And I'm really trying not to laugh hysterically, because I know it's a serious matter - but it IS a funny story (told so well). I'm sure you'll make amazing strides with your new machine, but remember to surface... I'm sure R will appreciate it! I'm pretty keen to make an apron next year on my sister's old machine - I imagine I'll have a similar tale to tell.

i know how frustrating sewing can be in the beginning! The thread breaking probably means your tension is too tight. If you have your manual you might want to confirm how to adjust that and loosen it one step at a time. Good luck!

helicopter6: I am so glad you are laughing... I am too! I had some really high expectations :)

amy: thanks for the advice. I went back to the "typical" setting for my machine, as per the manual.... now I think I'm just need practice! the stitches are still wonky (front vs. back) but the thread doesn't seem to snap as often... but I still need lots of help. I also think part of my problem is that I am very impatient.

mlle paradis: oh, yeah, no worries, i'll take a break... starting tomorrow, we'll have a new addition to the family (can't wait to blog about it!!) that I'm sure will distract me from sewing, knitting, working, everything... more tomorrow!!
